DAY 3: REACH DWARKA - DWARKADHEESH TEMPLE - GOMTI GHAT - RUKMINI TEMPLE.
DWARKADHEESH TEMPLE:
The Dwarkadhish Temple, also known as the Jagat Mandir needs no introduction. One of the most revered Hindu temples dedicated to Shri Krishna, the temple is located in Dwarka, Gujarat, and is a part of the highly revered Char Dham Yatra. The temple stands as a symbol of devotion and faith, attracting millions of devotees every year.
The temple has been originally built over 2,500 years ago by Vajranabha, the great-grandson of Lord Krishna. However, the current structure was reconstructed in the 15th–16th century after being destroyed multiple times. It is a magnificent five-story structure, supported by 72 intricately carved pillars, and stands at about 51 meters high. The entire temple is spellbinding and even a glimpse is enough to humble you. The Shikhara (spire) is adorned with a flag that is changed five times a day and is visible from miles away.
According to the puranas, Dwarka was the golden kingdom of Lord Krishna, which he ruled after leaving Mathura. It is believed that after Krishna’s departure from the mortal world, the city was submerged into the Arabian Sea. Archaeological findings suggest remnants of an ancient underwater city, supporting the stories.
Climbing the famous '56 steps to Moksha' and entering Dwarkadhish Temple through the Moksha Dwar on a full moon night which was an enchanting experience. The temple, bathed in moonlight, created a divine aura, with the Arabian Sea in the background. Of course, the temple was crowded, the night arti was soon to begin but the chanting added to the spiritual charm, making it a truly mystical and unforgettable experience.
GOMTI GHAT:
The Dwarkadheesh Temple overlooks the entire stretch of Gomti Ghat which adds to the charm of the sacred tirth. The ghat is lined with small temples dedicated to Lord Krishna, Maa Gomti, Lord Shiva, Sudama and a very old Sun temple right at the confluence of Gomti River and the Arabian Sea.
Pilgrims take a holy dip in the river to cleanse their sins before visiting Dwarkadhish Temple. The serene vibes, gentle waves which can roar during high tide, along with the temple in the backdrop create a divine and peaceful atmosphere, especially during sunrise and sunset. There are lots of small shops selling religious paraphernalia and diya baskets which you can float in the waters - adds to the magical experience of this sacred place.
RUKMINI TEMPLE:
Your trip to Dwarka in incomplete without visiting this temple. The Rukmini Devi Temple, located 2 km from Dwarkadhish Temple, is dedicated to Goddess Rukmini, the chief queen of Lord Krishna. According to puranic story, Sage Durvasa once cursed Krishna and Rukmini to be separated from Dwarka and for the region to suffer water scarcity. As a result, Dwarka has salty water, and till date, devotees offer water at Rukmini Temple to seek blessings for their family.
DAY 4: EXPLORING OTHER TEMPLES OF DWARKA (NAGESHWAR, BEYT DWARKA, GOPI TALAV) + LEAVE FOR SOMNATH
Nageshwar Jyotirling
BET DWARKA:
Bet Dwarka, an island 30 km from Dwarka, was the residence of Lord Krishna during his rule. Earlier, it was only accessible by a boat but now there is a Sudarshan Setu (earlier known as Signature Bridge) that connects Okha to Bet Dwarka, making it possible to reach Bet Dwarka by road as well.
According to puranas, Sudama, Krishna’s childhood friend, visited him here with a humble offering of poha (flattened rice), which was all he could afford. Despite his wealth and divine stature, Krishna humbly accepted the simple offering of poha with immense love and respect. The temple today stands as a testament to this very message that true devotion and humility are valued far more than material wealth.
